“I hate this place,” Sylvia muttered as she snuggled in close to Chip on the air bed they shared.

“You didn’t like Belize, you don’t like Missouri…there’s no pleasing you,” he grinned.

“It’s cold.”

“You’re not kidding. But we should be back in Texas fairly soon; once the river goes down the crisis will be over.”

“There’s always another crisis.”

“Yeah, but at least it’ll probably be warmer.”

“That’s something, at least.”

“And the money’s good; our savings are going up fast.”

“How long will we keep doing this?”

“Huh.” Chip shrugged. “Right now, as long as the money stays sweet. They’re not going to need furniture movers or beauticians for a while. The way I figure it, when the government gets the upper hand they’ll stop paying us as well, and that will be our signal to look for something else.”

“That sounds like a plan.” She sighed. “Do you think you should have gotten a leader slot?”

“I don’t want one; being a medic suits me, and I still have rank. Plus I’m the conduit guy for the troops, which is important. Marv says my role is like a top sergeant in the military. Me and Brick have made a place for ourselves in the company.”

“Just so long as you’re good with it.”

“What about you? You and BJ are senior to Chef and Scarface; you ever think of going shooter and taking rank?”

“Oh, hell no. I’m staying where I am; BJ will, too. This stuff is bad enough without having to make other people take risks. No, I’m staying put.” She snuggled closer. “What do you think the world will be like, after?”

“Less crowded,” he said after a moment. “More cautious. Maybe a little more aware of what matters, and how fragile things really are. For a generation, anyway.”

“We’ll win, won’t we?”

“Yeah. If they couldn’t stop a handful of regular people in an RV, they won’t stop us now.”
